Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, MP, yesterday rejected BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's allegation that right to vote and media freedom are absent in the country.

"This is a shameless lie. It is the Awami League that has fought for right to vote in this country," he said addressing a press conference at AL president's Dhanmondi office in the city.

About freedom of mass media, the AL leader said the government has not imposed any censorship on media.

"It is Khaleda Zia's falsehood. The country is progressing well at present compared to anytime in the past. This is the reason for BNP's irritation," he added.

Hanif said the BNP knows that the people will never turn to this 'cursed' party, if the present trend of prosperity continues in the country.

Responding to Khaleda Zia's claim that the past BNP government was not involved in corruption, he said the nation knows that Bangladesh became champion in corruption five times during the BNP regime.

Referring to corruption charges against Khaleda Zia, Hanif posed a question why she did not appear before the court if she is innocent. He went on saying how Khaleda Zia’ son Tareque Rahman is leading a luxurious life in London without the money amassed during the past BNP rule.

Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said a delegation of AL will visit Santal area in Ganibdaganj on Sunday. The AL will stand by the affected families there, he added.

Other AL leaders, including Abdur Rahman, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdus Sobhan Golap, were present at the press conference.
