Jamdani has got the registration as the Geographical Indication (GI) product. The classic Muslin craft and one of the finest textiles of the country got the GI registration as the first GI product of Bangladesh.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, on behalf of Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under his ministry, handed over the GI registration certificate today to Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) chairman Mustaq Hassan Md Iftekhar.

"With giving GI registration to Jamdani, the country has stepped forward to protect the rights on traditional and national products," the industries minister told the certificate giving ceremony, held at his office in the capital city.

He said all other national products including Hilsa would also be given the GI registration in phases.

Weavers now can apply to the DPDT to use the GI logo while marketing Jamdani products including famous Jamdani Saari both locally and internationally.

On Sunday, Director General of Department of Fisheries Dr Syed Arif Azad submitted a formal application to the industries ministry, seeking the GI registration for the national fish Hilsa, known as Ilish. Hilsa will be the second Bangladeshi GI registered produce after Jamdani.

With the GI registration, the country will be able to protect better the origin of Jamdani and Hilsa and rights on these products.

According to World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), GI is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin such as a town, region, or a country.

The use of GI may also act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.

The GI enables those who have the right to use the indication to prevent its use by a third party whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.
