Schoolgirls are in great spirits at Chandpur’s Kachua Upazila these days with their attendance soaring up.

Locals said the credit goes to the initiative of former home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, who gifted 300 schoolgirls with bicycles.

“Now I do not bunk classes anymore,” said Yasmin Akter, seventh grader at Shingadda High School.

The changes are visible in all the 39 schools covered by the programme.

Both parents and teachers have hailed the move.

“I took this initiative to achieve 100 percent literacy rate among females,” said local lawmaker Mohiuddin.

In a society where vested groups often try confining girls at home, such a move has been showered with praises by locals, particularly the parents and teachers.

“The girls are now coming to the school regularly on their new bicycles,” said Botukrishno Basu, principal of Shachar Bohumukhi High School.

Jannat Ara, a ninth grader of Teguria High School, said earlier it took her at least half an hour to reach school on foot.

“Now I can cover the distance much faster with the cycle that MP sir has provided,” she said.

Majhigachha MM High School’s head teacher Mamunur Rashid said: “He (MP Alamgir) deserves a big round of applause for boosting the spirit of the female students.

“Now they are attending classes with much more enthusiasm than before.”

Abdul Aziz, a guardian, Kachua Upazila Parishad Chairman Shahjahan Shishir, and Kachua Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Ashraf have also lauded the former minister.

A nation’s development is largely dependent on its literacy rate. The government is concerned in this regard, said Mohiuddin.

“Girls coming from unprivileged families are being provided with scholarships as well,” added the man behind the show.
