The cabinet today approved a proposal to amend ‘Law and Order Disrupting Crime (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Act 2017’ increasing the jail term to seven years for breaching the law.

The punishment for crimes under the act was two to five years which would be two to seven years now, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

The tenure of the Act will remain in effect until April 7, 2019. The law was enacted on April 9, 2002 for two years initially and then it was extended for several terms.

Asked about the reason for extending the term of the Act, the cabinet secretary said, “This act is needed when crimes increase. It will become more effective now,” he added.
