A woman was killed under the wheels of a private car as muggers from the vehicle pulled her vanity bag on Mirpur Road in Dhanmondi 7 of Dhaka early today.

The deceased Helena Begum, 38, used to work as an ayah at the Green Life Medical College Hospital in Green Road.

The mugging took place around 5:15am near Anwar Khan Modern Hospital and College as the victim and her husband were crossing the Mirpur Road, said Monirul Islam Montu, the husband.

They were returning to their Green Road residence from Sadarghat launch terminal early this morning, Montu said adding that they went to their village home in Barisal to get their national identity cards.

They were crossing the road after getting down from a bus at Dhanmondi 7.

All of a sudden Montu found that his wife was not with him and saw her being dragged away by a white-coloured private car as Helena’ one hand was stuck to a door of the vehicle, he said.

Two men were inside the vehicle which went in the direction of Gabtoli, Montu, a technician of a private company, said.

At one point he saw Helena’s body going under a wheel of the vehicle, Montu added.

She died on the spot, he said.

The couple, hailing from Korapur village under Barisal Bandar upazila, have three sons and a daughter.

Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, told The Daily Star that body of the victim was handed over to the family after a postmortem.
