Prime Minister visits Rajshahi today

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina goes to Rajshahi today on a daylong visit to join the 6th Corps Reunion of Bangladesh Army Engineering Corps as well as to inaugurate 21 development projects and lay foundation stones of 12 other schemes.

During the visit, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, will address a public meeting to be organized by the party, in city's Madrasa Moidan in the afternoon.

Prime Minister's Office sources said after her arrival in Rajshahi in the morning, the prime minister will join the 6th Corps Reunion of Bangladesh Army Engineering Corps at Qadirabad Cantonment.

In the afternoon, Sheikh Hasina will open 21 development projects and lay foundation stones of 12 others by unveiling their plaques from Madrasa Moidan.

The schemes to be opened by her are: the four-storey academic building of Bangabandhu Degree College at Boalia, the five-storey academic building of AHM Qamaruzzaman Degree College in Boalia, the four-storey academic building of Damukura Hat College in Paba, the four-storey academic building of Arani Degree College in Bagha, the four-storey academic building of Abdul Karim Government Degree College in Tanore, the four-storey academic building of Baghmara Degree College in Baghmara, the four-storey academic building of Biraldaha College in Puthia, the Chandrima Police Station, Kashiadanga Police Station, Katakhali Police Station, Paba Police Station, Karnahar Police Station, Damukura Police Station, Belpukur Police Station, a rubber dam in the Barnoi river, the Rajshahi (North) Fire Service Station, Rajshahi Naohata Fire Service Station, Engineering and Survey Institute, the extension administrative building and hall room of Godagari Upazila Complex and the office of the Divisional Narcotics Control Department.

The projects of which the foundation stones to be laid by the premier are: the six-storey female dormitory of Rajshahi Government Mohila College, Kashiadanga 33/11 KV Power Sub-Station, Meherchondi 33/11 KV Sub-Station, a 324.50 meter flyover on Rajshahi-Natore Highway, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre, a 96-meter PSC Girder Bridge on the Baral River in Charghat upazila, Baragachhi and Rajabari Union Land Offices in Godagari upazila, Charghat and Nandangachhi Union Land Offices in Charghat upazila, the administrative building of Rajshahi Medical University, the Union Health and Family Welfare Centre in Durgapur upazila and the academic building of private Shah Makhdum Medical College.

Local Awami League leaders said they will raise a demand for nine more uplift projects for the development of Rajshahi.

"We will place a demand for nine development projects before the prime minister for her consideration for improving living and livelihood condition of Rajshahi people," Rajshahi City Awami League President AHM Khairuzzaman Liton told reporters in Rajshahi recently.

These include a full-fledged agricultural university, two government schools, one special economic zone, a leather city, turning Rajshahi airport into an international one, non-stop intercity train on Rajshahi-Dhaka route, train service on Rajshahi-Kolkata route and dual gauge railway track on Rajshahi-Abdulpur route, he said.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi Rakkha Sangram Parishad (RRSP), a social platform, will place a 17-point demand before the prime minister for the development of the district.

The leaders of the organisation expressed hope that the prime minister will be sincere in implementing these demands for the development of Rajshahi.

The demands include ensuring uninterrupted gas supply to the mills and factories, giving gas connection to the city dwellers, construction of the Ganga Barrage, implementing North Rajshahi Irrigation Project and installing one more CNG station.
