Govt to establish technical school, college in all upazilas

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid today said the government is establishing a technical school and college in each upazila across the country aimed at transforming the human resources into modern technology-based experts.

"The work of establishing 100 technical schools and colleges in 100 upazilas in the first phase began and in other upazilas work will begin soon," he said. 

The minister was addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a daylong workshop on "The tasks of Officer in Charge of the center to take examination of Diploma in Engineering curriculum tests" at International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) auditorium in the city. 

Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) organised the workshop marking the upcoming Diploma in Engineering Examination for second, fourth, fifth and seventh parts on June 16. 

Nurul Islam Nahid said the government has established a woman technical school and college in every division as the percentage of women students in technical education is increasing day by day. 

The government has also taken various initiatives including five big projects, 23 high standard polytechnic institutes and new curriculum to expand the technical education and make a skilled nation, he said. 

"We have been implementing different projects like Skill and Training Enhancement Project (STEP) to develop the quality of technical education and training," he added.

Nahid said the government has set a mission to raise the rate of technical and vocational education students by 20 percent within 2020 to turn the country's people into human resources.

"The percentage of enrollment in technical education was around one percent. Now the enrollment increased to about 14 percent. Government of Bangladesh has set a mission of increasing the enrollment in the technical education by 20 percent by the year 2020 and 30 per cent by the year 2030," he said.

Education Secretary M Sohrab Hossain presided over the session while Additional Secretary of Education Ministry M Helal Uddin, among others, was present on the occasion.

A total of 1,93,918 students from 456 educational institutions will take part in the exams this year. Of them 1,72,582 students are male and 21,336 female.
