SA Women sweep Bangladesh 5-0

Bangladesh Women’s cricket team could not utilise their last chance to escape a clean sweep losing the last game by six wickets in a five match ODI series against host South Africa (SA) at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein on Monday.

Bangladesh suffered a 154-run defeat in the 4th game after nine wickets defeats in each 3rd and 2nd games, starting the campaign with a 106-run loss.

In the day’s match SA Women chased down a target of 167 runs, scoring 169 for 4 in 35 overs as Laura Wolvaardt hit a boundary in the match’s last ball on her way to unbeaten 70* off 96 balls, including seven boundaries and one six.

Player of the match L Wolvaardt shared a partnership of 79 off 16.3 overs with opener Lizelle Lee in the opening stand. 

L Lee was caught by skipper Rumana Ahmed off Khadija Tul Kubra after scoring 44off 49 balls including seven boundaries.

SA skipper Dane van Niekerk (29 off 41b; 1x4) was another double digit scorer for the side, was stumped by Shamima Sultana off Rumana on 138/3 in 28.2 overs.

Spin bowler Khadija Tul Kubra got three for 37 in 10 overs while Rumana (1/28) was another wicket taker for Bangladesh.

Sent in to bat first, Bangladesh scored 166 for 9 in 50 overs the visiting side highest score on this tour spurred with two half centuries by skipper Rumana Ahmed  and opening batter Shamima Sultana.

Rumana hit 74 off 123 balls, including seven boundaries, before being caught behind by Trisha Chetty off Marizanne Kapp on 156/5 in 46 overs.

S Sultana stayed for 53off 91 balls, including five boundaries and one six, and shared a partnership innings of 85 off 24.3 overs with Rumana in the 4th wicket.

S Sultana and Rumana started their innings from 23/3 in 10.5 overs and ended recovered the setback carrying the team collection to 1084 in 35.2 overs before S Sultana was caught by Laura Wolvaardt off Masabata Klaas.

Another double digit scorer for Bangladesh number-6 player Nigar Sultana (12 off 35b) was run out on 159/6 in 48.1 overs.

Shabnim Ismail got three for 17 runs in nine overs while Marizanne Kapp (2/21), Masabata Klaas (1/30) and Raisibe Ntozakhe (1/43) shared four wickets for winning team.      

Bangladesh scored 566 runs for 49 wickets in five ODIs 164/10; 89/10; 71/10; 76/10 and 166/9 in the 1st to 5th matches while SA women scored 831 for 22 wickets in five games 270/9; 90/1; 72/1; 230/7 and 169/4 in 1st to 5th matches respectively.

After the day’s result Bangladesh recorded two wins against South Africa in their 17 ODI encounters.

However, Salma Khatun-led Bangladesh will play a three-match T20I series against SA Women side. The T20I series will be held on May 17, 19 and 20.    

Among their previous five T20s, Bangladesh secured only one win against SA Women.
