The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested a youth from Narayanganj on Wednesday in connection with the lynching of an innocent woman, Taslima Begum, following a child-lifting rumour in Badda last Saturday.
Scrutinising the video footage of the incident, the DB identified the arrestee named Ibrahim Hossain Hridoy, 19, as chief suspect who led the lynching, said DB’s additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Nazmul Hasan.
With the arrest of Hridoy, the number of arrests in the case rose to seven.
DB sources said, Hridoy fled from his home in Badda immediately after the incident. He was arrested from his aunt’s home in Bhulta area of Narayanganj at around 8:30pm.
On Saturday, Taslima Begum, a 42-year-old mother of two, went to Uttar Badda Govt Primary School to collect information about her daughter’s admission.
She was taken to the head teacher of the school for interrogation as a rumour spread outside that she was a child-lifter. Later she was dragged out of the school by a mob and then beaten mercilessly.
Police rescued critically injured Taslima and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she was declared dead.
Taslima hailed from Raipur upazila in Laxmipur and was living with her daughter and mother in the capital. She was separated from her husband two years back.
