Undertake uplift schemes in planned way: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today asked the architects to take uplift projects in a planned way for ensuring sustainable development.
“You (architects) should take development schemes bearing in mind the possible rush of the people, vehicle movement, lengths of the roads of the project areas and environment as well to make the development sustainable,” she said while witnessing the plans of four uplift projects at the Prime Minister Office here.
The prime minister simultaneously ordered the architects to take appropriate plans in building proper waste management and sewerage system, underground utility service system, rain water harvesting system and water reservoirs to this end.
She also instructed them to keep open space, natural ventilations, veranda and modern fire extinguishers in new buildings to ensure favorable environment for the residents of those apartments.
She asked the authorities concerned to ensure proper waste and water management system in the high rise apartments and buildings to be constructed.
The premier suggested constructing sewerage line in one side of the proposed projects instead of all sides.
She stressed the need for formulating a law to stop wholesale construction of buildings.
The premier underscored the need for setting up more universities instead of increasing the seats for students in the existing universities. She said, “The government is set to construct one university in every district.”
The projects which were presented before the prime minister are: the revised master plan for the construction of multi-storied residential flat project for the government officials inside Azimpur Government Colony in Dhaka and a project for constructing 20-storey building at Bangladesh Secretariat keeping a long space for holding the cabinet meeting.
The remaining two other projects are construction of multi-storied buildings at Sher-e Bangla Nagar on 43 acres of land in line with the design of world famous architect Luis I Kahn and construction of a 20-storey multipurpose building at Hatirjheel in the capital.

Public Works Department will implement the project by December 2021 for construction of 1140 flats of 1800 sft, 1500 sft and 1250 sft.
Besides, under the construction of multi-storied buildings on 43 acres of land at Sher-E Bangla Nagar, PWD will construct fifty-one 10-storey buildings with 1836 flats between 1000 sq feet and 1800 sq feet.
The project will cost Taka 4444.51 crore and be completed by 2021.
The prime minister okayed the proposal of engaging architect Henry Wilcot , an associate of Luis I Kahn, as an overseas consultant or an adviser of Sher-e Bangla Nagar multi storey buildings project.
Under the 20-storied superstructure building being constructed at Bangladesh Secretariat at a cost of Taka 420.98 crore, the office building has two basements while an option has also been kept for holding the cabinet meeting there.
After witnessing the plan of a project of construction of a multipurpose amenity building with car parking facility at Hatirjheel at a cost of Taka 500 crore, the prime minister suggested construction of the 20-storey building beside the River Padma or the Jamuna.
Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim, PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman, PMO Secretary Sajjadul Hassan and PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion.
Immediate past Chief Architect of the Architect Department Kazi Golam Nasir, RAZUK’s Chief Engineer A S M Raihanul Ferdous and Assistant Architect of the Architecture Department Syeda Saika Binte Alam highlighted various key features of the projects through power point presentation.
