Police have arrested 22 people suspected to be involved in mobile phone SIM card fraud.
They have been held from the capital’s Tejgaon and Shyamoli neighbourhoods during raids on Tuesday, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Wahidul Islam.
Police said they belonged to an organised crime gang, and, one of them, known as ‘Wahid’, worked for mobile phone operator Airtel.
Some of those held are also distributors and retailers of the mobile phone service provider.
Details will be provided at a media briefing later on Wednesday, said Islam.
A senior police officer, asking not to be named, said that those arrested were involved in selling pre-activated and biometrically registered SIM cards.
According to official figures, 116 million of over 130 million subscribers across the country had completed the biometric re-registration of their SIM cards until June 4.
