UN official lauds development in Bangladesh

Visiting Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnership Affairs Assistant Secretary General of UN Women, Laxmi Puree yesterday said Bangladesh is leading in health, education, environment, energy and other sectors in the world under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The UN official made the observation when she called on Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her residence in the city, said an official release.
UN Women Country Representative Christine Hunter was present, among others, during the meeting.
Empowerment of women, gender equality, women development, prevention of child marriage, status of women in parliament and participation of women in parliament came up for discussion in the meeting.
The UN official appreciated development activities in Bangladesh and said the country is playing an important role in implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (MDG).
She sought cooperation of the speaker to take forward gender related activities in Bangladesh.
The speaker said gender activities are going on successfully in Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh has long been playing a pioneering role on women leadership, she said, adding that the PM is making significant contributions at the grassroots level.
