Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday greeted the taxpayers, Value Added Tax (VAT) administration, officials and employees on the occasion of National VAT Day and National VAT Week.

In a message, she hoped that the successful observance of VAT Day and VAT Week with spontaneous participation of taxpayers would expedite the overall development in Bangladesh.

National VAT Week 2016 is being observed in the country from December 9 to 15 while National VAT Day 2016 will be observed today.

The Prime Minister recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had established National Board of Revenue (NBR) in 1972.

The Awami League government has undertaken all necessary programmes to strengthen the NBR.

"We have thoroughly restructured the tax administration with a view to making the country's tax policy and tax management time-befitting," the Prime Minister said, adding that the whole tax management has been brought under modern information technology.

She said the government is working to enforce modern technology based Value Added Tax Act, 2012 in the next year.

The Prime Minister called upon all to build happy and prosperous 'Sonar Bangla' cherished by Bangabandhu by implementing Vision 2021 and Vision 2041.

She wished success of all programmes of National VAT Day 2016 and National VAT Week 2016.
