Massive awareness created against militancy, terrorism: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government got huge response from the people about its ongoing campaign against terrorism and militancy.

"Huge mass awareness has been created against militancy and terrorism due to the government's ongoing campaign against these social menaces," she said.

In this connection, Sheikh Hasina said the people of all strata including guardians, teachers, religious leaders, students and public representatives have been engaged in the campaign.

The prime minister made the remarks when newly appointed High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam Hajah Masurai Binti Haji Masri called on the PM at her Jatiya Sangsad office here yesterday evening.

After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

While highlighting Bangladesh's tremendous socioeconomic development, the prime minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started rebuilding the war-ravaged country soon after the independence.

"But after brutal assassination of Bangabandhu, the nation-building work was halted as the country was run by military dictators for a long time," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said coming to power in 1996 after 21 years, the Awami League government restarted development activities and took many epoch-making initiatives for the development of the country.

She said various social safety net programmes like giving allowances to widows, poor and distressed people in different forms were undertaken to lift the poor people from the poverty line.

The prime minister said her government took various measures for the development of agriculture, education and health sectors during the period.

Sheikh Hasina also pointed out her government's success in achieving 7.1 percent GDP in last fiscal and the introduction of micro-saving programme to make the poor people self-reliant.

While talking about the expatriate Bangladeshis living in Brunei, the premier said about 15,000 people from Bangladesh are working there and contributing to the economy of both the countries.

At the meeting, the new Brunei high commissioner said she is very happy to witness the development of Bangladesh under dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

She also appreciated expatriate Bangladeshis working in Brunei saying they are very hard-working.

PM's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury was present on the occasion.
