Affected farmers in low-lying areas are in mental agony and depression

Around 1,400 families in two villages in Moulvibazar’s Kamalganj upazila are marooned in flash flood caused due to the incessant rain and onrush of water from the hills.

Around 500 hectares of paddy, vegetables and spices fields have been inundated as breaches developed in the flood control embankments of Dholai river. Thirty five more villages in Shamshernagar, Munshibazar and Patanusha unions have gone under water due to the rain since Saturday.

Floodwater also causes sufferings to the cattle farmers as cattle lost their grazing land.

Farmer Ohidul Islam, Manik Mia and Tahid Ali said their Boro paddy fields were completely damaged.

Affected farmers in low-lying areas are in mental agony and depression as it becomes tough for them to pay bank loans and interest to landlords.

However, Kamalnagar upazila agriculture officer Mohammad Shamsuddin Ahmad claimed that 350 hectares of Boro paddy fields and 50 hectares of vegetable fields were inundated.

On the other hand, upazila education officer Gokul Chandra Debnath said Sunday’s first terminal examination of Karimpur and Basudebpur primary schools were cancelled due to the flooding.

Kamalganj upazila project implementation officer Mohammad Asaduzzaman said 20 tonnes of rice had been allotted primarily for the flood affected people in the area.
