President, PM greet NMST's golden jubilee celebration

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday greeted all concerned of the National Museum of Science and Technology (NMST) marking its Golden Jubilee celebration.

In separate messages, they lauded the activities of the science and technology museum saying the NMST is playing a very conducive role to help flourish the inner potentialities of learners as well as general people through studying science and doing research.

President Abdul Hamid expressed his gratitude to people concerned with the science and technology museum saying that the science-based education as well as practices detects the way towards light from the darkness and help build a logical society.

"Museum cherishes deep knowledge as a storehouse of knowledge since long periods . . . it always upholds the real history before masses and also helps new generation to know the past accurately," Abdul Hamid observed.

The President said the NMST is working since its inception to build a science-minded nation through holding different programmes, including science fair, mobile science exhibition, science-based discussion, seminar, and observing national science and technology week each year.

He said the building of scientific mindset can accelerate the desired goal of the country's Liberation War by removing illiteracy, superstation, corruption and unconsciousness in the society as a whole.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the present government has taken different pragmatic steps to build Bangladesh as a self-reliant nation based on science and modern technology.

Referring to the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to country's science education, she said, "Bangabandhu started reforming a war-ravaged country by strengthening Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Bangladesh Science and Industry Research Council and other institutions."

"We have to build Bangladesh a country based on science and technology to sustain in the competitive world keeping country's head high," the premier said.

"As part of initiatives to ensure development in science, we have set up Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, National Sea Research Institute in Cox's Bazar, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre, National Institute of Biotechnology, Atomic Energy Centre in Chittagong, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences in Cox's Bazar," she mentioned.

"Besides, fellowship has been introduced in a bid to build scientist, technologist and researcher while a law entitle 'National Science and Technology Museum' was also enacted in 2010 in this connection," Hasina added.

Wishing a success of the programme, the prime minister hoped that the institution would play a very pioneering role to build a non-communal and science-minded nation.

Sheikh Hasina also opined that mass people specially the new generation with the limited natural resources will be involved in science-practice to reach a middle-income country by 2021 and developed one by 2041.
