Students of seven government colleges that have recently been affiliated with Dhaka University clashed with police this morning while staging demosntation at Dhaka’s Shahbagh demanding announcement of dates and schedule for their examinations.
Following the clash, vehicular movement on the road from Shahbagh to Science Laboratory remains halted when the report was filed around 11:30am.
The agitating students have taken position near Bata Signal at Elephant Road while a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has reached the spot to control the situation.
“We are talking to the agitating students and trying to control the situation,” said Sajjad Ibne Raihan, senior assistant superintendent of police of New Market Police Station.
The students formed a human chain and staged a sit-in in front of the National Museum around 10:00am, before policemen charged batons and tear shells to disperse them from the spot.
The students were from Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawrdy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College.
“Our families cannot bear to send us money regularly. As our examinations are not being held in time due to the session jam, our future has become bleak and that is why we tried to hold peaceful demonstration demanding announcement of examination date and schedule, but police did not allow us to stage the demonstration,” said Jamal Uddin Ahmed, a student of Kabi Nazrul Government College.
