Speaker meets Vietnam National Assembly President

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday met Chairperson of Vietnam National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam.
Dr Shirin, also the chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) executive committee, led a five-member delegation of Bangladesh Parliament, at the bilateral meeting held at Vietnam National Assembly Hoa Mai Hall, said a Parliament Secretariat handout on Thursday.
Imran Ahmad MP, Pankaj Nath MP, AM Naimur Rahman MP and Senior Secretary of Parliament Secretariat Dr Md Abdur Rob Howlader were the other delegation members.
During the meeting, they discussed various issues of mutual interest, women empowerment, gender equity and parliamentary businesses of the two countries.
Dr Shirin said Bangladesh is maintaining a 7 percent GDP growth and has improved lifestyle of the country’s marginalised people by bringing them under the social safety net programme.
She stressed the need for the exchange of experiences between the two countries for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Chairperson of Vietnamese National Assembly emphasised strengthening relations between parliaments of the two countries through visits of parliamentary representatives.
She said Bangladesh has proved its capacity by arranging the 136th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) successfully.
Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hoped that the upcoming 63rd CPA conference, which is scheduled to be held in Dhaka in November next, will be a success.
Earlier in the morning, Dr Shirin arrived in Hanoi on a five-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the President of Vietnam National Assembly, said a PID handout.
Chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the assembly Nguyen Van Giau and chargé d'affaires of Bangladesh Embassy in Hanoi Md Azizur Rahman received the Speaker at the NoiBai International Airport in Hanoi.
Dr Shirin paid homage to Vietnamese great leader President Ho chi Minh placing floral wreaths at the Mausoleum of the great leader.
