Swiss assistance sought for permanent solution to Rohingya crisis

Noting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina introduced a new path of humanity giving shelter to displaced Rohingyas, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury sought assistance from Switzerland government to build global opinion and denounce the “acts against humanity and violation of human rights” in a bid to reach a permanent solution to the crisis.
The Speaker came with the urge while Swiss President Alain Berset called on her at the latter’s office in the city on Wednesday.
During the meeting, they discussed different bilateral issues, including Rohingya, economic and infrastructural development, poverty alleviation, social security net and women empowerment.
Dr Shirin also thanked Swiss President for visiting Kutupalang camps in Cox’s Bazar to insight into the ongoing humanitarian crisis of Rohingyas, said a handout of Parliament Secretariat on Wednesday.
The Swiss President congratulated the Speaker for successfully hosting the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference and the 136th IPU Conference.
Alain Berset praised Bangladesh for its hospitality and giving shelter to displaced Rohinygas.
He also gave assurance of providing assistance in solving Rohingya problem and stand beside Bangladesh in permanent repatriation of Rohingyas.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip ASM Fioz MP, Senior Secretary Abdur Rab Howlader, Swiss ambassador to Bangladesh Rene Holestine and senior officials concerned were present.
