The verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case has proved that all are equal in the eyes of law, Bangladesh Awami League (AL) said in its reaction this afternoon.
"No one is above the law. The verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case has proved that both Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman are corrupt," AL Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said at a press briefing at party president Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi in the city.
Hasan said a Dhaka special court today sentenced BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to five-year imprisonment in the graft case. The court also sentenced five other accused, including her 'fugitive' elder son and BNP's senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, to 10-year imprisonment each, he added.
"It is condemnable that BNP leaders and activists carried out destructive activities to foil the verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case to protect Khaleda Zia," he added.
They (BNP) created panic to hinder the corruption case of Begum Khaleda Zia," Hasan added.
He said the BNP leaders and activists have failed to foil the trial process of Zia Orphanage Trust graft as members of law enforcement agencies remained alert to avert any ill attempt in this regard.
AL Presidium Members Dr Abdur Razzak, Abdul Mannan Khan, Organizing Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, AKM Enamul Haque Shahim, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Women Affairs secretary Fazilatunnesa Indira and other leaders of the party were present at the press briefing.
