A gang-rape accused was killed in what police claimed a gunfight in Fishery Ghaat area of Chattogram city early today.
Deceased Shahabuddin, 24, was an accused in a gang-rape case filed following the incident on January 27 in Chattogram, said Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Shahabuddin, a driver by profession, and his cohorts allegedly picked up an 18-year-old madrasa student from SS Khaled Road in the port city and raped her before dropping her off at the same spot, the official said.
When the gang again called and asked her for meeting them, she along with her father, went to Kotwali Police Station to filed the case, the official said.
Police launched an investigation and arrested one Shyamol, of the same gang, who gave them information on Shahabuddin.
On Shyamol’s information, police conducted a drive near the Fishery Ghaat area, where Shahabuddin and his cohorts were holed up, said Mohammad Kamruzzaman, inspector (investigation) of the case.
“Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, they started firing on us, which prompted the policemen to retaliate leading to the gunfight,” said Kamruzzaman.
