Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated construction of multilane Karnaphuli tunnel, the country's first tunnel road under any river.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony on Sunday, she said the tunnel will ease communications between the port city and other parts of the country and boost trade and commerce.
The 3.43km-long-tunnel will have 5.63km approach road linking the main city, port and western side of the Karnaphuli with the heavy industry-prone eastern side of the river.
She said Karnaphuli tunnel will connect Chattogram Port and Anowara Upazila and cut road distance between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. It will reduce traffic jam on two bridges over the Karnaphuli River and reduce heavy traffic load on Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
Earlier, on October 14 in 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly laid foundation stone. Chinese firm China Communication Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) is consultant for construction of the tunnel.
