Tk 11,950 cr allocated for Railways Ministry

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith today announced the national budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2016-17 proposing Taka 11,950 crore to transform railway into a reliable, cost-effective and environment-friendly public transport system.
"We will continue our efforts to transform the Bangladesh Railway into a reliable, cost-effective and environment-friendly public transport system," he said while placing the national budget in the House.
The minister said the government has enhanced Taka 4,233 crore in the proposed budget for the ministry against the outgoing year's allocation of Taka 7,717 crore. Of the total allocation, Taka 2,835 crore has been fixed for non-development, while Taka 9,115 crore for development sector.
"We have plans for construction of new tracks, doubling of rail lines, rehabilitation, construction of new railway bridges/underpasses/overpasses, modernization of signaling system, collection and rehabilitation of passenger coaches in 2016-17 fiscal year," he said.
