SMEs’ contribution to economy huge: Speaker

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Tuesday said Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are making huge contributions to the national economy.
Bangladesh will make huge progress if we can unlock the hidden potentials of the grassroots entrepreneurs with a coordinated initiative, she said while addressing the concluding ceremony of Bangladesh StartUp Cup-2017 at city’s Brac Centre Inn.
At the event, certificates were distributed among 57 small and medium entrepreneurs for their contributions to their respective sectors across the country.
Better Stories, a private sector initiative aimed at fostering socially-responsible and innovation-driven entrepreneurship in Bangladesh, arranged the business model competition with different types of business ideas.
The Speaker said rural women are also working with the small and medium entrepreneurs across the country. Women are contributing to the family and society and ultimately the country’s economy by earnings from their works at home.
Noting that SMEs loan of maximum Tk 10 lakh can be taken from the Bangladesh Bank at zero percent interest, she said Joyeeta Foundation help ensure women’s access to the market.
Director of Project Management of Better Stories Allen Hossain Selima and its Managing Director Minhaz Anwar also spoke on the occasion, said a Parliament Secretariat handout.
