They think it’s a controversy: Tanushree Dutta on Bollywood celebs being silent [ #MeToo]

Tanushree Dutta, who set the ball rolling for the #MeToo movement in Bollywood after she accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual misconduct on the sets of Horn Ok Pleassss in 2008, feels people in the industry should consider it a watershed moment rather than a controversy.

Speaking at Mumbai Manthan 2018 recently, Tanushree said many stars hadn’t taken any stand on the issue as they considered the #MeToo movement a controversy rather than a turning point for women’s position in society at large.

She spoke about Bollywood stars such as Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh, and others’ silence on the matter. “They are considering it a controversy. They aren’t considering it a movement. When we consider something a controversy, we wait for it to get over. We wait for it to pass on. That’s what happened (even) 10 years ago,” said Tanushree.

Among the actors who have actively supported the movement are Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar. While Aamir backed out of Gulshan Kumar’s biopic after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced against its director, Akshay halted the shooting of Housefull 4 after allegations against director Sajid Khan.

On Monday, Tanushree Dutta proceeded to file a defamation suit of Rs 10 crore against Rakhi Sawant who had said she was cooking up stories.
