Bangladesh International Theatre Fest wraps up in style

The week-long theatre festival titled ‘Bangladesh International Theatre Festival’ ended at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segun Bagicha area on Wednesday. 

On the concluding day of the festival, Nikolai Zykov Theatre from Russia staged light puppet show at the National Theatre Hall of BSA at 07:00pm followed by the closing ceremony. 

Earlier on June 20, the week-long festival was inaugurated at the National Theatre Hall of BSA. Presided over by Cultural Affairs Ministry’s Acting Secretary Dr. Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal, Planning Minister M A Mannan graced the occasion as chief guest while State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid inaugurated the festival.

Cultural Affairs Ministry, in association with BSA and International Theatre Unit, organised the festival. Supported by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, six troupes from Russia, China, France, India, Vietnam and Nepal and two from Bangladesh brought their plays on stage during the weeklong festival.

Alongside staging theatre productions, the festival also featured a seminar on the third day of the weeklong event.

Rabindranath Tagore’s much-acclaiimed dance drama Mayar Khela directed by Oarda Rihab staged at 07:30 on the opening day after the inaugural ceremony.

On the second day, France theatre troupe Theatre de Vidy Lausanne and Young Vic London staged the drama ‘Oh My Sweet Land’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 05:00pm while, the drama Macbeth was staged by Chorus Repertory Theatre of India at 07:00pm at the main auditorium of BSA.

22nd June, the third day of festival, a seminar on Meeting and Transmitting of the International, National and Sub-altern in the Theatre Space held at Seminar Room of BSA at Level-6 from 3 pm to 5 pm. Meanwhile, Annesha Theatre from Bangladesh  staged Joytun Bibir Pala at the main auditorium of BSA at 07:00pm.

Johoo Theatre from China staged their play F CK at the National Theatre Hall on June 23, the fourth day of the festival.

Mandala Theatre from Nepal and Le Ngoc Theatre of Vietnam staged their play Jhyalincha (Dragonfly) and Kim Tu (adapted from The Wilderness) at 7 pm at the main auditorium of BSA on June 24 and 25 respectively.

And, the festival ended yesterday with the staging of Russian theatre troupe Nikolai Zykov’s production Light Puppet Show at the main auditorium of National Theatre Hall of BSA at 07:00 pm.

Theatre lovers from country and abroad enjoyed the week-long theatre Festival.
