Man, daughter-in-law sentenced to life term in Laxmipur rape case

A Laxmipur court has convicted a man and his daughter-in-law and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in a rape case.
The court also fined the convicts-Main Uddin, son of Delwar Hossain and his daughter-in-law Halima Begum, wife of Nurul Islam of Shakerchar village in Sadar upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
Besides, the court asked the deputy collector to take necessary steps to bear the expenses of the rape victim.
After hearing the records and 21 witnesses, Laxmipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Saidur Rahman Gazi handed down the verdict on Thursday.
According to the prosecution, the convict Main Uddin, with the help of Halima, violated a young girl for several times with a promise to marry her on April 4, 2005.
When she got pregnant, the rapist refused to marry her. On October 30, 2005, the victim filed a case against the duo under Women and Child Repression Prevention Act.
During the trail proceedings, the victim gave birth to a baby girl.
