Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader yesterday said Comilla and Narayanganj city corporation polls proved that holding free and fair elections is possible under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"The election in Comilla was held in a free, fair and neutral manner. It is the people's choice to decide who will lead the city corporation," he told newsmen after laying the foundation stone of a flyover at Gazipura in Tongi near Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
About the defeat of the Awami League candidate in Comilla city polls, Quader said the party men could not unite there during the polls but the AL leaders and activists could do it during the Narayanganj polls.
The Awami League general secretary said their candidate could not win too when Comilla was a municipality. "But this time, in the city polls, the difference of votes has decreased," he added.
About the traffic jam in highways, the minister said the government is constructing flyovers in all gridlock-prone points.
"Six flyovers are being constructed from Airport to Gazipur on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway while nine more will be built from Gazipur to Elenga of Tangail to reduce gridlocks," he added.
Gazipur City Corporation Acting Mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron and Gazipur City Awami League President Ajmat Ullah Khan, among others, were present on the occasion.
