Speaker seeks UN support for solving Rohingya issue

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has sought over all cooperation and sincere efforts from the United Nations (UN) for resolving the Rohingya issue, according to an official release issued here today.
The Speaker's appeal came while she was holding a meeting with United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Under Secretary General Zhenmin Liu on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York.
Responding to her call, the UNDESA under secretary general said, "The Rohingya crisis is one of the top most priority agenda of the UN secretary general."
The UN official assured of providing all out cooperation from the world body for a humanitarian and political solution to the Rohingya problem.
At the beginning of the talks, Zhenmin Liu thanked the Speaker and said Bangladesh has achieved a tremendous success in various socio-economic indicators including poverty alleviation, quality education, agricultural production, self-sufficiency in food production, health-nutrition services, life expectancy increase, social safety net and women empowerment.
Dr Shirin highlighted the policies and action plans adopted by Bangladesh for welfare of the old citizens of the country.
She sought DESA's cooperation for socio-economic development, SDG implementation and in the process of overcoming the LDC status. Hailing the government success in various sectors particularly poverty alleviation, the UN official said, "Bangladesh has been carrying out huge development activities in the socio-economic sector with setting a model of poverty alleviation before the world community."
The UN official also assured Bangladesh of providing highest cooperation in the process of overcoming from the less developed country category, the release added.
Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Masud Bin Momen was present in the meeting.
