Police arrested 2 over gang-rape in Sylhet

Police arrested two people, including a hotel owner, in connection with the gang-rape of a teenage girl at Chandnighat  in Dakkhin Surma upazila here on Thursday night.

The arrestees were identified as Syed Niaz Uddin, owner of Hotel Al-Taqdir, and Jasimuddin of Dirai upazila in Sunamganj district.

Khairul Fazal, officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Surma Police Station, said Jasim developed a relationship with the teenage girl of Goainghat upazila over mobile phone. On April 20, he took the girl to the hotel with a promise to marry her.

Later, Jasim along with the hotel owner and its two staff violated the girl for 11 days.

On April 30, the victim tactfully came out of the hotel and took shelter to one of her friends' house.

Later, the victim filed a case against the four people—Jasim, Niaz, Zakir and Nur Mia  with Dakkhin Surma Police Station on Thursday.

Police then conducted a drive at the hotel and arrested Jasim and Niaz around 10:30 pm while the others managed to flee.
