Bollywood actress and Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra on Monday sought support for Rohingya children saying these kids are their future and the world needs to care about them.
“These children are at the forefront of this humanitarian crisis, and they desperately need our help,” she said while visiting Rohingya camp in the district.
Priyanka Chopra arrived here on a four-day visit to see Rohingya situation on the ground.
“Follow my Instagram to share my experiences as I visit the #Rohingya #Refugee camps on this #UnicefFieldVisit. #ChildrenUprooted,” she tweeted with her photo from flight.
“The world needs to care. We need to care,” she added.
Hours after her arrival here in the morning, she left for Cox’s Bazar by a private airlines flight.
“I’m in Cox’s Bazar for a field visit with Unicef, to one of the largest refugee camps in the world,” Priyanka Chopra wrote in a post on Instagram.
She said the world saw horrific images of ethnic cleansing from the Rakhine State of Myanmar.
This drove nearly 700000 Rohingyas across the border into Bangladesh – 60 percent are children.
“Many months later, they are still vulnerable, living in crowded camps with no idea when or where they will ever belong…even worse, when they will get their next meal,” she wrote.
And, she added, as they finally start to settle and feel a sense of safety, monsoon season looms, threatening to destroy all that they have built so far.
“This is an entire generation of children that have no future in sight. Through their smiles I could see the vacancy in their eyes,” Priyanka Chopra wrote.
An official told UNB that she will spend next two days in Cox’s Bazar and will return Dhaka on Thursday. She will leave Dhaka in the evening on the same day.
Priyanka visited a Rohingya camp on Monday and she will visit other camps in the next two days and talk to Rohingyas, he said.
Priyanka was named a global Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, after serving as a National Goodwill Ambassador to India for ten years.
She is also a United Nations Foundation Girl Up Champion, and is involved in a number of efforts to protect children’s rights and promote the education of girls in India, including her namesake charity The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education.
